Getting that $8 usually means buying USDT and moving it onto RedotPay, which is not free: a typical TRC20 withdrawal from a major exchange runs about $1 to $2.40 in flat fees (roughly $1 on Bybit, $2.40 on Coinbase, per 2026 exchange fee schedules), on top of whatever spread the exchange or P2P merchant charges. That funding cost alone can offset most or all of the $2 RDVIR discount — it is not free money by itself.
Where the math changes is ongoing spend. A card that charges a foreign transaction fee costs you that fee on every international purchase — averaging 1.59% across all U.S. card issuers in 2026, with individual cards ranging up to 3% (WalletHub 2026 Credit Card Landscape Report). A stablecoin-funded card has no per-purchase FX markup beyond the network cost paid once to fund it. Worked example: at the 1.59% average fee, a $2.40 funding cost is offset once you route about $150 of international spend through the card instead; on a card at the 3% high end of that range, the break-even drops to about $80. Below that spend level the stablecoin path is not obviously cheaper once funding costs are counted; above it, the FX-fee card gets worse the more it is used, while the one-time funding cost does not repeat.
Which network you fund over changes that math further. TRC20 (Tron) is the cheap, stable option: a flat $1–$2.40 exchange withdrawal fee, most of the time. ERC20 (Ethereum) is far more volatile — typically $1 to $10 under normal network conditions, but gas prices can spike above $20–$30 during congestion, since the fee is priced in gas units and ETH's dollar value, not a flat rate. Sending the same $8 RDVIR-discounted card top-up over ERC20 during a busy window can cost more than the RDVIR discount saved in the first place; over TRC20 it almost never does.
